Day 17 – There Shall Be No Disputations Among You

Part 17/19: 40 Days with the Risen Christ

Christ warns against disputations

Words of the Risen Lord

There shall be no disputations among you… For verily, verily I say unto you, he that hath the spirit of contention is not of me, but is of the devil, who is the father of contention, and he stirreth up the hearts of men to contend with anger, one with another. — 3 Nephi 11:28–29

The Moment

As Christ taught the people the correct manner of baptism, He also gave a warning: “There shall be no disputations among you.”

They had apparently disagreed about doctrine—even about baptism itself. The Risen Lord, knowing the destructive power of division, cut straight to the heart:

“He that hath the spirit of contention is not of me.”

Insights from Scripture and Prophets

Christ did not say that discussion is wrong. He said that **contention**—driven by pride, ego, or anger—is not of Him. The devil, He said plainly, is its father.

Elder Quentin L. Cook taught:

“The adversary rejoices in contention and division. The Lord wants us to love others and to avoid contention.”
Elder Quentin L. Cook, October 2023 General Conference

In a world full of argument and blame, Christ calls His people to be different. United by truth, seekers of peace, led by the Spirit.
