Day 2 – Peace Be Unto You

This entry is part 2 of 19 in the series 40 Days with the Risen Christ
Jesus appears to the disciples

Words of the Risen Lord

Peace be unto you. Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet. — Luke 24:36–40 (KJV)

The Moment

On the evening of the resurrection, ten of the apostles were gathered behind closed doors, troubled and afraid. Jesus Himself appeared and stood in the midst of them, saying, “Peace be unto you” (see Luke 24:36). But they failed to understand, thinking they had seen a spirit. He asked them, “Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?” Then He invited them to see the wounds in His hands and feet and said, “Handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have” (see Luke 24:37–39). And then, He showed them His hands and His feet (see Luke 24:40).

Insights from Scripture and Prophets

The first word the Savior spoke to His gathered disciples was simple and divine: “Peace.” In a moment of fear, He offered assurance. In the face of doubt, He extended physical proof. His resurrected body—flesh and bone, not merely spirit—stood as living witness that death had been conquered. Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf taught:
“To all who suffer—to all who feel discouraged, worried, or alone—I say: Never give in. Never surrender. Never allow despair to overcome your spirit. … And to all who feel burdened by sin or failure or unworthiness, I say: Peace be unto your soul.” — Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf, April 2013 General Conference
