Day 11 – He Was Taken Up

Part 11/19: 40 Days with the Risen Christ

The Ascension of Christ

Words of the Risen Lord

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. — Acts 1:8–9 (KJV)

The Moment

The Risen Christ gathered His disciples on the Mount of Olives. They still hoped for political redemption—asking, “Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?” But Jesus redirected them to something far greater: the coming of the Holy Ghost and the worldwide spread of His gospel (see Acts 1:6–8).

Then, as He finished speaking, something remarkable occurred: “While they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.” (see Acts 1:9).

Insights from Scripture and Prophets

The Ascension is not an ending. It is a transition—from presence to power. The Savior withdrew His physical presence so that He might pour out His Spirit and empower His servants across the earth.

Elder Bruce R. McConkie taught:

“With this majestic event, the risen Lord ascended to His Father… Now, from His throne on high, He rules in majesty and sends His Spirit and His servants to bring salvation to the world.”
Doctrinal New Testament Commentary, Vol. 2

This was the end of Christ’s mortal, resurrected ministry among the Israelites. But it was also a beginning—the beginning of the Church’s mission, the unfolding of Pentecost, and the opening of His ministry to “other sheep” in distant lands.

The next chapter of His ministry begins not in Jerusalem—but across the sea, at a temple in Bountiful.
