Day 6 – Lovest Thou Me?

This entry is part 6 of 19 in the series 40 Days with the Risen Christ
Jesus asks Peter, Lovest thou me?

Words of the Risen Lord

Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these?
He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee.
He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.…
He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me?…
And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee.
Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
John 21:15–17 (KJV)

The Moment

After breakfast on the shore, Jesus turned to Peter—not to chastise, but to restore. Three times He asked, “Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me?” (see John 21:15).

Each time, Peter answered yes. But on the third time, he was grieved—perhaps remembering his threefold denial. He replied, “Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee.” (see John 21:17).

Christ’s response was simple, but prophetic: “Feed my sheep.” In this moment, Peter was not only forgiven—he was commissioned. His calling as the chief apostle was affirmed. His love became action.

Insights from Scripture and Prophets

The threefold question mirrors the threefold denial—but not to shame, rather to reclaim. Christ re-centers Peter’s identity on love and service.

President Howard W. Hunter taught:

“The Lord asked for a confession of love, then gave the responsibility: ‘Feed my lambs … Feed my sheep.’ Love of God is the root from which all proper service to others springs.”
President Howard W. Hunter, October 1992 General Conference

The question—“Lovest thou me?”—comes to all of us. If we answer yes, we are invited to act. To minister. To care for His children. To lift where we stand.
